Rose Red
Update: There's a now a Rose Red DVD out that includes "The Making Of..." We're in
it briefly (on video, dancing/working with the actors, not interviewed). Yippee
ha! A couple of
the actors said glowing things about how much fun the dancing was. That gave us the warm
fuzzies.
One of our most interesting recent endeavors was for a
Steven King / ABC miniseries entitled 'Rose Red'. Mr. King had
written in a 2 minute swing dance scene for 6 of the characters and they
needed someone to choreograph the scene and teach the actors to dance. It
was with great pleasure that we received a call asking if we would be available to work with the actors through November, 2000. What could we say but YES!
The actors turned out to be absolutely wonderful
people to work with, though most had little or no dance training and they
were sometimes squeezing in mini dance lessons between 'takes'. This
occasionally meant as little as 5 minutes of focused dancing in one of the rooms on
the set and then hustling back to the scene they were shooting in another
room - only to return 10 minutes later for more lessons.
They seemed to have a lot of fun with this, and we
certainly had a blast working with them and watching them shoot various
scenes. On the final day of the shoot, they
surprised us with a gift copy of the movie script on which all of them
signed and some wrote the following:
|
"...Your
kindness, patience, talent & laughter made learning to Jitterbug
so much fun! Thanks for everything!"
Kimberly J Brown, nominated for Best Young Actress in Tumbleweeds
at 2000 Academy Awards |
|
"...in
gratitude of your kindness, patience, skill & musical imagination!"
Kevin Tighe: Geronimo, Another 48 Hours, lead actor in the 1970's TV series
'Emergency'. |
|
"Dearest
Dance Master & Mistress, you two are the coolest. It was so lovely
to meet you & dance with you. You made dancing fun for
me" Melanie Lynskey: Snakeskin, But I'm a Cheerleader, Ever After, The
Frighteners, Heavenly Creatures |
|
"...thank
you for being so wonderful and teaching us to be fabulous on the dance
floor" Emily
Deschanel: It's a Shame About Ray, It Could Happen to You |
|
"Dance
Master & Mistress, [I am] the Lord of the Dance"
Julian Sands: Leaving Las Vegas, Time Code, One Night Stand, A Room
With a View |
The miniseries was filmed in a number of locations
in Seattle, with the primary set at the Sandpoint Naval base on Lake
Washington. They had recreated a full mansion with all of it's
rooms in one of the hangers at the base. It was unbelievably
beautiful - hopefully worth the reported $5 million they spent on the
set.
The miniseries aired on ABC Jan 27-31, 2002.
